The American bulldog is not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

The American Bulldog is a breed descended from the English Bulldog, once used by the British for herding cattle. The English bulldog was brought to North America to become a working dog to help on farms because of their strength and determination. Their intelligence, loyalty and agility made them useful for herding and hunting. After World War II, this breed almost disappeared, but a former activist - John D. Johnson, in Georgia - managed to save the breed and to revitalize interest in it. As the breed has grown, American bulldogs have become attractive and sought-after pets for American families. There are 2 types of American bulldogs. The first, called Bully, is stockier, has a shorter muzzle and a well-marked stop. The second, called Standard, is taller and more slender, while remaining massive. Today, the majority of dogs are hybrids (a mix of the two types). They have also become the mascots of many schools and organizations, such as Georgetown University and Yale.

The American Bulldog is a medium to large sized, strong dog with a heavy, compact, stocky body. The back is straight and the rump oblique. The head is broad and square, with strong jaws. The nose is large and can be varied in color. The eyes are round, large, generally dark. The ears are of medium size, set quite low, cropped or floppy. The neck is strong and muscular, and the tail is thick at the base and carried low, but pointed at the tip. It can also be cut. The hair is very short and harsh. The coat is mainly white with a few brindle spots present on the head and/or body.

The American Bulldog is a dog with robust health and a life expectancy between 11 and 14 years. The breed, however, is predisposed to certain diseases: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and hernias. Note also that some bulldogs are prone to being overweight. The American bulldog's coat does not need any special care. Occasional brushing to remove dead hair during the shedding period is sufficient. As American bulldogs are active and muscular dogs, they need a food rich in protein. His diet should contain meat protein as the first ingredient, omega-3 fatty acids to maintain a soft and healthy coat, and a small amount of carbohydrates to prevent weight gain.

The American bulldog has a strong personality, he is imposing and dominant. He is intelligent, calm, courageous and determined. He is friendly, very devoted to his master and loving with the family and especially with children. He will need to be educated from a young age and with an owner who is not afraid to impose himself and establish a sense of hierarchy. It is an intelligent dog, and therefore easy to train. It is recommended that its master be gentle but firm, without being harsh. An education based on consistency and balance. He is a very energetic dog who will be happy alongside an active family who will offer him daily activities to help him exercise. A very active dog, the American Bulldog is not really made for apartment life. Without proper exercise and stimulation, the American Bulldog could develop unwanted behaviors, such as chewing furniture, in order to satisfy its boredom. The American Bulldog well although sociable with his family, can be aggressive with strangers and other dogs, especially those of the same sex.
