In the Iberian Peninsula, we can find cave paintings depicting dogs strongly resembling the Andalusian Hound. Dogs very similar to these have been bred throughout much of the Mediterranean basin since ancient times. Despite the widespread belief that the Andalusian Hound was introduced to Spain around 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians, recent genetic studies have concluded that these dogs have a close genetic relationship with other European hunting dogs and do not are not more "primitive" than the others. The breed as such was officially recognized by the Real Sociedad Central de Razas Canina de Espana on March 29, 1992.

The Andalusian Hound has the particularity of having ears erect on its head and almost pressed against each other. There are several types of Andalusian Hounds: small, medium and large with rough, long or soft hair. Whatever its size, its ears remain its most important feature. It is a noble-looking dog with a well-proportioned, supple and muscular body. The Andalusian Hound has remarkable similarities with other breeds Mediterranean, including the Portuguese Podengo and the Ibiza Hound. The legs are straight and rather lean. The skull is long with a rather pointed snout. The large Andalusian Hound generally measures between 53 and 64 cm and weighs between 21 and 33 kg. The medium-sized Andalusian Hound measures between 42 and 53 cm and weighs between 10 and 22 kg. While the smallest variant measures only 32 to 42 cm and weighs around 8 kg. It should be noted that there is also a dwarf variant of the "medium" Andalusian Hound. Known colloquially as the Maneto, this dog has achondroplasia and will therefore have short, compact limbs. Despite (or perhaps because of) its dwarfism, this dog is commonly used to hunt small prey and is known to be a good pet.

The average life expectancy of an Andalusian Hound is generally between 10 to 12 years. Robust, no major health problems have been observed in the Andalusian Hound. It is recommended to regularly brush the three varieties of hair, especially for the long-haired variety to avoid the formation of knots. This breed is not hypoallergenic and is therefore not recommended for people with allergies. Also note that large ears should be checked regularly to ensure that they are free of earwax or various debris.

The Andalusian Hound is known to be an efficient and methodical hunter. It is a fast dog that has a natural hunting instinct and therefore must be kept on a leash in open spaces, being easily distracted by small, moving prey. It is advisable to be careful when introducing an Andalusian Hound with other animals, especially with smaller ones, as it is not uncommon for its hunting instinct to manifest itself. is a loyal and affectionate dog towards his family. Very intelligent, he is able to quickly assimilate new tasks. Moreover, being voluntary, it is generally very rewarding and fun to train them. They are dogs always ready to play, with a resolutely mischievous side. A good watchdog, the Andalusian Hound is attentive and observant, prompt to alert its master of the presence of a new person. They can be wary of people they don't know, without being aggressive. Having a propensity to be submissive at times, a relationship with a trusting and encouraging owner is essential to making this dog happy. Always anxious to please his master, the Andalusian Hound will respond better to a firm but gentle master who will use positive reinforcement. Enduring and energetic, the Andalusian Hound can run for hours, and will therefore be happiest with a sports master who will offer him long daily walks. Indeed, an Andalusian Hound that does not exert itself enough could express this pent-up energy by being, for example, destructive. It is therefore vital to provide the Andalusian Hound with adequate daily exercise in order to stimulate this energetic and intelligent dog.
